Mission Statement

The ministry’s goal for these students is at the forefront of the Center’s purpose:  to guide students who are searching for God; to continue the faith journey of those who have found Him; to forge new friendships, imitating the communal life found in the Acts of the Apostles; but overall, to support and develop a lifelong and personal relationship with Jesus through the Sacraments and His Church.

About

Newman Ministry is a Catholic Organization that has worked to establish Catholic spaces in many colleges and universities, Catholic and non-Catholic, across the United States since 1883. They are known as Catholic Newman Centers and have played a significant role in the faith journey of many students.  The Church has traditionally supported Catholic Newman Centers for those attending these institutions of higher learning.

The Newman Center at Queens College aspires to be a place of sanctuary, spiritual growth, and fellowship for the student body. In alignment with the college’s motto, “Discimus ut serviamus: We learn so that we may serve,” the Center offers students the opportunity to learn about the Catholic faith or deepen their Catholic identity.

The Newman Center is the result of a longstanding partnership between Queens College and the Diocese of Brooklyn. Both institutions have a history of serving immigrants and the underprivileged through education in Brooklyn and Queens.

Originally located on property owned by the Diocese of Brooklyn, the Center moved to its current location on the grounds of Queens College in the Student Union Building in the early 1970s.  There have been eighteen chaplains assigned to Queens College dating back to Rev. Raymond J. Neufeld in 1937.  The longest tenured chaplain was the late Rev. Paul A. Wood whose assignment lasted from 1993-2019.  His presence on campus made a lasting impact on the Queens College community.  Annual reports from past chaplains and campus ministers to the Bishop of Brooklyn have been discovered and have historical precedence.

Queens College is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) network.  The college, from an administrative standpoint, has had a long-standing relationship with the Diocese of Brooklyn from real estate transactions to Diocesan on campus presence within its faculty.

According to our research, there are approximately 4,000 Catholics attending Queens College with approximately 400 on campus who are practicing their faith but who are not active in their parish life.

With Church Doctrine forefront and with respect to the ideologies of the college administration, Queens College has rekindled its relationship with the Diocese of Brooklyn and, most notably, Bishop Robert J. Brennan.  In this new collaboration, the Newman Center is expected to produce the servant leaders of tomorrow.

The Center is staffed by a chaplain who is also the Director of Campus Ministry and a Campus Minister. In addition, Bishop Brennan invited FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students), a missionary organization, to join in the evangelization process.  FOCUS responded by sending four missionaries to walk alongside the students in their relationship with God.

Collaboratively, the staff and FOCUS Missionaries bring the spirit of Acts 2:42 to Queens College through Mass, adoration, Bible Studies, game nights, talks, networking events and having daily Fellowship.
